Be prepared for rainy, wintry driving

The past few winters have been daunting for those of us who commute to work, especially in the Northeast and other parts of the country that have experienced significant rain, wind, and snow storms. It is fall, and winter is just around the corner, so we need to prepare.
Because vehicle crashes are a top cause of workplace accidents and employer expense, employers should encourage employees to prepare for the changing seasons. Keep reading for tips to share about safe driving in inclement weather conditions.
Vehicles need to be prepared in advance and drivers must be ready to adjust speed or change a route based on the weather. Extra caution is the key to success when major weather patterns threaten.
The Oregon Department of Transportation suggests the following steps to make sure your vehicle is ready for the changing seasons:
1. Ensure the heater and defroster are working properly.
2. Test all lights.
3. Carry spare lightbulbs.
3. Use antifreeze that’s good to -25°F; check and fill washer and other fluids and make sure hoses aren’t loose or brittle.
4. Keep wipers clean and in good condition; fill the windshield washer tank.
5. Make certain your battery is fully charged (also check battery age and cable conditions).
6. Ensure your tires are in good condition and properly inflated for best traction, including your spare.
7. Carry chains or have traction tires installed for winter.
8. Keep an automotive safety kit in your vehicle (see below for some items that should be in the kit).
If you are driving in areas experiencing heavy rain or windy conditions, adjust your driving to fit conditions and remember these driving tips:
1. Turn off your cruise control.
2. If you lose traction and your vehicle feels like it’s floating, gradually slow down. Don’t slam on the brakes.
3. Be on the alert for downed trees, especially around a blind corner.
Bicyclists should be prepared with the right clothes, including:
1. A good wind jacket over layers of clothing,
2. A pair of wind pants or long underwear,
3. Windproof mittens over insulating liners or gloves on milder days,
4. A neck gaiter and warm hat under your bicycle helmet, and
5. A helmet cover with an ear band.

Toyota of N Charlotte tips: Drive safely in fog

When you get behind the wheel of a new Toyota in N Charlotte, you can be faced with severe weather conditions. Weather can be pretty unpredictable, so it's imperative that you equip yourself with knowledge on how to take on different types of weather conditions.
One of the most dangerous weather conditions is fog. You'd be surprised how many people don't know how to handle their vehicle in fog! For that very reason, our new Toyota dealership in N Charlotte is sharing safe driving tips for driving in fog.
Take on foggy weather in your new Toyota in N Charlotte
You'd be surprised at how dangerous fog can be when you're driving! One of the first tips we give you is to avoid driving your new Toyota in fog altogether; however, we know that this isn't always feasible. For that very reason, we're sharing safe driving tips so you can stay safe when you drive in the fog.
Tip #1 Turn on fog lights and low beams
Before you even leave your driveway, make sure that the fog lights and low beams of your new Toyota in N Charlotte are on. Turning these on will increase your visibility to other drivers, which will help you avoid a bad collision. You have to make sure that you turn on your LOW beam, not high—high beams can actually obstruct your view, as the light can reflect off the fog. If your new Toyota in N Charlotte has fog lights, use those instead, as they're designed for this exact weather condition.
Tip #2 Slow down and keep your distance from other cars
Speeding is NEVER a good idea, it's even worse when you drive in the fog! Fog obstructs your view, so you might not know if there's a car in front of you. Slow down and keep your eyes on the road. You should also keep a large distance between your new Toyota near Charlotte and the vehicle in front of you. The road can get slippery from the condensation, which means it would be harder to stop your Toyota near Charlotte.
Tip #3 Keep an eye out for critters
In addition to keeping an eye out for other drivers, you should also be aware of animals on the road. Animals tend to be more courageous when they're draped in fog and might dart into the road! The last thing you want to do is hurt an animal when you're driving, so be careful! Stay safe in your new Toyota in Charlotte during foggy weather
Tip #4 Keep to the right side of the road
If visibility is really bad, we suggest you stick to the right side of the road. If you can't see the street, use the right side as a guide. You might also want to use a GPS to help gather a sense of direction. The GPS might also help you find exits and streets.

P-platers at risk of 'Jekyll and Hyde' syndrome

The first time new P-plater Tiarne Jurd drove solo to school, four friends piled into the car, blasting the radio, laughing and distracting her. "I had never heard such loud music; it completely changed how I drove," said the 17 year-old, who attends Colo High School. "You kind of get adrenalin; you feel like you are invincible because you ... show off." With so much excitement and music, she drove faster than she intended. Psychologist Bridie Scott-Parker describes this change as a typical "Jekyll and Hyde moment" that she has seen repeatedly among the young drivers after they get their P plates. Advertisement The experience terrified the cautious year 11 student enough that Tiarne has since avoided driving with groups of friends. "I was shocked; I am not experienced enough to handle this," she said of that day back in June after she got her Ps. Tiarne was the first among her friends to get her P plates, after driving 120 hours with her parents and taking a private lesson with a driving school. Most of her driving experience was on rural roads, or back and forward between her home and her grandparents' house in Baulkham Hills. While her parents did their best to prepare their daughter, researcher Dr Scott-Parker says parents do not do enough driving at times and places where their children will drive by themselves once they get their licences. Very little of Tiarne's 120 hours of driving experience happened on dangerous roads, the bulk occurred in daylight or early evening, and none was late at night or with friends and distractions like radio. Tiarne's parents gave her a Kia Rio for her birthday so she could drive the country roads to school and to her job at a local restaurant. Dr Scott-Parker recommends that parents introduce their children to more risks in the last 20 hours on their L plates, and start playing a more passive role so that young drivers become used to only having "one set of eyes." Once they have P-plates, parents should continue to drive with them. Even simple steps like sharing the family car, or making the new driver pay for petrol, helped to discourage risky behaviour: "If they have to come home with your Camry with scratches down the whole side of the car, they are much more careful," she said.

Fog warning for the region: Tips for drivers

A YELLOW warning for fog for Yorkshire and the Humber has been issued for this morning (Sunday, October 12).
The Met Office said: "There will be areas of dense fog developing during Saturday night, becoming more widespread around dawn on Sunday, before thinning slowly during the morning.
"The worst affected areas are likely to be low lying regions where the visibility may reduce to less than 100 metres in places, leading to difficult driving conditions and some disruption to travel."
Drivers are urged to take care and the RAC has issued some tips for those who take to the roads:

RELATED CONTENT

  • Use fog lights - The Highway Code states that headlights must be used when visibility is less than 100 metres – roughly the length of a football pitch. Those needing to travel are advised to take extra care and ensure their lights (particularly fog lights) are in good working order before setting off.
  • Carry a mobile phone with a fully-charged battery and car adaptor if available.
  • Ensure your fuel tank is full as using lights and heating can use a lot more fuel than usual.
  • Make sure you know how to operate your front and rear fog lights before setting off.
  • Headlights should be dipped at all times.
  • Follow the ‘two-second rule’ to leave sufficient space between you and the car in front.
  • Don’t attempt to navigate using the car in front’s tail lights, as this could lead you to getting too close to them and not leave sufficient stopping distance.
  • If visibility is very limited, wind down your windows at junctions and crossroads to allow you to listen out for approaching traffic. If you really cannot see, you should consider stopping until it is safe to continue.
  • Remember to turn your fog lights off as soon as conditions improve.

Older people can refresh their driving skills on Dorset County Council-run course

OLDER residents in Dorset are being given a chance to brush up on their driving skills.

The Dorset County Council-run course for drivers over 70 to boost confidence follows the success of a pilot project.

It also comes amid research which suggests motorists aged over 75 appear to have higher incidences of crash involvement at junctions when turning right than those aged between 55-74, and that older drivers may have greater difficulty judging oncoming vehicle speed and distance.

DCC Cabinet member for environment and economy Cllr Peter Finney said he will be signing up for the course.

The council is offering drivers aged 70 and over a chance for £5 to take part in a friendly discussion session about driving issues.

The session does not involve any driving and covers subjects including staying fit to drive, car adaptations, new driving techniques, changes to the Highway Code, negotiating roundabouts and junctions safely, and dual carriageway and motorway driving.

There is also an option for a practical refre-sher drive at a later date.

This 90 minute one-to-one practical driving session takes place on local roads and includes town and country driving.

This aims to improve defensive driving techniques, hazard awareness and better road positioning, as well as providing tips that can help reduce fuel consumption and vehicle wear and tear.

The practical session is being offered free of charge for a limited number of people on a first-come, first served basis. The normal cost of a practical refresher session is £37.50. Cabinet member for environment and economy Cllr Peter Finney said: “In a rural county like Dorset, driving is the most common way for people to get around, giving them access to work, loved ones, shops and health services.
“Research suggests that human error plays a part in almost all collisions and nearly half the people killed or seriously injured on Dorset’s roads are in a car. We could all do with a refresher from time-to-time, however long we’ve been driving.

“I’m going to have a go at this course. It will give me a chance to brush up on my driving skills.”

For further information and to book a place on the theory discussion session visit dorsetforyou. com/roadsafety/gold or call 01305 224558 Theory sessions will take place at Dorchester County Hall on October 17 at 10am, at Upton House, Poole on October 20 at 2pm, at Weymouth Fire Safety Centre on November 12 at 2pm, at Dorchester County Hall on November 21 at 2pm, at Beaminster’s Public Hall on December 2 at 10am and at Upton House on December 10 at 2pm.
